INSTEAD OF AN INTRODUCTION
THE DILEMMA ABOUT FOAM MATERIALS: A TRAP OR A VALUE? WHAT IS THE OPTIMAL COMPOSITION THAT FULFILLS ALL PARAMETERS OF A GOOD MATTRESS?
When, a decade ago, a somewhat aggressive campaign began advocating the removal of springs from sleep underlays, we were faced with a major challenge in responding to the new market demands, knowing all the benefits of CORE innerspring. Therefore, we have carefully examined the materials presented, taking into account all their qualities as well as the shortcomings, to develop an optimal “recipe” that offers comfort while maintaining air permeability. A large number of foams promised comfort, but it was concealed that most of them, when they were over 8 cm thick, had the problem of moisture retention, which customers, seduced by marketing and the easy availability of these roll mattresses, could not recognize.
We were determined not to compromise, nor to give priority to any trend at the expense of quality, but that Schlafgarten sleep system will remain consistent in terms of sustainability and usability in all criteria for the value of a good mattress.
That’s why we decided to use the so-called “open cell” technology to create foams that remarkably allow airflow through micro pores, minimizing moisture retain in the mattress. However, experience has shown that the combination of foams emphasizes the best of each, and that their properties are used together for comfort and breathability.
THE CORE WITHOUT CORE, OR WHAT INSTEAD OF THE CORE?
We wondered what would replace the undisputed support of our handmade core, for customers who ask in requests that they only want a sleeping pad made of foam material. We have used HR (high resilience) foam with high elasticity and density, which is up to 70% thicker than standard foams. This ensures good sleeper support with adequate ventilation.
COMFORT ZONE: PROFITABLE COMBINATION OF TWO FOAMS – UNIQUE COMFORT
After providing the core with a rich layer of HR foam, we have emphasized the comfort with VISCO elastic foam in the COMFORT zone, commonly referred to as MEMORY FOAM.
MEMORY – A TREND OR TRULY A BENEFIT?
MEMORY FOAM, an innovation developed at NASA, has long been an absolute trend, presented like many revolutionary products as a permanent solution. Over time, this highly elastic foam got more and more opponents, which turned the public away from purchasing sleeping products based on memory foam. This anti-campaign resulted in only a few years with a change in the market. Buyers who once wanted to buy everything that has MEMORY in their name now look to old, more traditional materials. So what is the truth about the usefulness of MEMORY foam? It definitely is a modern material whose main characteristic is that it adapts to the temperature which corresponds to the body temperature of the pressure-exerting object (in this case the body of the sleeper), and in the so-called “open-cell foam” technology, which means that layers are formed in the matrix, through which air can flow. Due to its much greater density than standard foams, this material promises excellent durability and longevity. Many sleepers who used ill-conceived products with a MEMORY rich layer, complained of perspiration, neck problems, the feeling of “sinking in mud”, and paradoxically, under a strong anti-campaign, the foam became synonymous with discomfort. In fact, the truth is that MEMORY is an excellent material, but is only superior if its height and position in the mattress are optimized to give it the best qualities. After a long test phase and many pilot models, we have created an ideal ratio of the height of the MEMORY layer in the Schlafgarten sleep system, but given its weaknesses, we have added the comfort layer and other foams that produce the so-called “comfort gradient “. The comfort layer created in this way offers the best in MEMORY, which is comfort, without the softness “catching” you, precisely because the layer rests on a denser HR foam.
Nevertheless, we cannot deny that the overall experience of both support and comfort largely depend on the slatted base on which such a mattress must be placed. This applies to all mattresses without wire core.
THE COVER – PROTECTION AND HYGIENE
The COVER layer as the connection between your body and the inside of the mattress has several functions, so you and your mattress are equally protected. Therefore, careful selection of materials is critical to providing the following features that are compatible with other mattress components and meet the principles upon which our philosophy of quality sleep is based.
The cover of the Schlafgarten mattresses is made of high-quality materials that give them the following properties:
The capillary structure of the materials from which our covers are made allows air permeability and provides optimal microclimate conditions beneath the sleeper, supporting the concept of the “breathing mattress”.
Our covers are an exception on the market, not only in terms of the type of materials, but also by the yield we produce them with, in double height, i.e. in double weaving, whereby outstanding durability and resilience can be ensured. Such extensive consumption of materials reduces the need for quilting the cover, which otherwise, compromises its elasticity. Therefore, our covers further support the comfort that the high quality foams of the COMFORT ZONE offer.
The elasticity of the materials from which our covers are manufactured, also contributes to the comfort and emphasizes the effect already offered by the materials in the COMFORT ZONE. The covers are extremely elastic, which is in connection with the comfort that they offer the sleeper. Without these properties, the rigid, inelastic cover would significantly reduce the comfort of the comfort layer.
The covers made in Schlafgarten are removable, therefore their hygiene is easy to maintain by washing in the washing machine at a 40 °C-cycle. This, along with the microstructure that dissipates moisture from the body of the sleeper, helps to improve the hygiene of the bed. In addition, the covers for double mattresses are split in two, so that they can be washed in standard volume washing machines, i.e. at home, thereby avoiding additional costs for dry cleaning.
AND A BIT MORE ABOUT THE „BREATHING MATTRESS“…
Do you know that a person loses up to 200 liters of fluid per year while sleeping? The fluid that is released during sleep will not remain “trapped” on the surface only when the mattress is made of such material and layers that allow airflow. In this way, excess water and perspiration evaporate throughout the day, preventing the formation of a micro-ambience that matches the development of mites and bacteria and creates a sensation of moisture and discomfort.
Each Schlafgarten mattress offers exceptional properties in terms of airflow through the mattress, creating a dry and healthy sleeping environment.
INSTEAD OF A CONCLUSION : A MODERN MATTRESS EASY TO USE
Memocell is a step forward in the modern concept of sleeping mats, with which we have successfully mastered the challenge of the “core without core”, but it has been proven that its properties offer a number of practical advantages. It is above all a mattress that is compact, of moderate height and easy to transport. It therefore served as an ideal solution for beds that do not have characteristic height, in drawer beds, as well as in situations where frequent manipulations and changes to the arrangement in the sleeping room are made (hostels, cabins, student dormitories). However, in order to achieve optimum comfort, it is recommended, as with all foam mattresses, to place them on a slatted base.
For the MEMOCELL model, Schlafgarten gives a 5-year guarantee when used with a flexible, elastic base.
The model MEMOCELL Schlafgarten is made in different standard sizes: 80×190/200 90×190/200 100×190/200 120×190/200 140×190/200 160x 190/200 180×190/200.
According to your wishes, we can also produce other dimensions and shapes.
